Man arrested for arson of a Pensacola Florida abortion clinic
By MIRIAM |

You may have missed this news, as it’s barely registered on the national media radar, but on New Year’s Day a Pensacola abortion clinic was destroyed by a fire. The clinic had been the site of violence and turmoil for a long time, including the 1993 and 1994 murders of two abortion providers.

Description of the Webinar

All states and territories must certify that they are in compliance with VAWA 2005 requirements for medical forensic examinations. Specifically, exams must be available to sexual assault victims: 1) free of charge, and 2) regardless of their decision to participate in the criminal justice process.

Communities have faced considerable challenges in designing protocols that are compliant, in areas such as: the initial response to a sexual assault disclosure, payment for the medical forensic examination, mandatory reporting to law enforcement, storage and transportation of evidence, case tracking and retrieval, processing of evidence, and the potential for evidence-based prosecution (i.e., without the victim\\\'s cooperation). For many states and territories, the changes that are required in public policy and daily practice have been described as \\\"monumental.\\\"

Victims' Group Refuses To Turn Over Names In Abuse Suit

ST. LOUIS (RNS) The director of a leading victims\' advocacy group refused to answer some questions or turn over documents in a deposition held Monday (Jan. 2) in a Kansas City, Mo., clergy abuse case.

David Clohessy, who directs the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) from St. Louis, said in a statement that attorneys for an accused Kansas City priest had requested \"hundreds or thousands of pages of SNAP records involving victims and others across the country going back some 23 years.\"

Several courts, including the Missouri Supreme Court, had rejected Clohessy\'s request to quash the deposition subpoena. Clohessy\'s lawyers argued that forcing Clohessy to testify could result in disclosing confidential information from victims of clergy sexual abuse, members of the organization and journalists.

But after the state supreme court declined to intervene, Clohessy was forced to testify, even as he refused to turn over certain documents.

In a statement, SNAP called the subpoena \"an unprecedented, bullying maneuver designed to protect child molesters and silence victims\" and \"a new low in church hardball tactics.\"

REPORTAJE

Taking Exception: Is Evidence of Prior Oral Sex by 15 Year-Old Victim Admissible in Prosecution of 38 Year-Old?

A 38 year-old defendant is charged with four counts of sexual conduct with a minor, and it is undisputed that he engaged in four acts of oral sexual intercourse with the victim, who was 15 years-old. The defendant, however, seeks to present evidence that the victim had engaged in oral sex with two other individuals, claiming that it went to his belief that the victim was eighteen or older. Should the court deem this evidence admissible? According to a trial court the answer is “yes,” and it may reach the same conclusion after a remand from the Court of Appeals of Arizona.

California PETITION

After holding our breath to see the outcomes of our fundraising and the Attorney General\'s approval of our initiative, we breathe a sigh of relief. The Californians Against Sexual Exploitation (CASE Act) petition launched on December 24th, just in time for Christmas!

Because of an amazing partnership with Chris Kelly and the Safer California Foundation, we can hire professional petitioners to ensure our success.

But we can\'t go anywhere without you. We need volunteers like you and your family, friends, neighbors to collect the signatures required to get the initiative on the November, 2012 ballot. Sign the petition now.

As I think about what is at stake in 2012, I am filled with great excitement and some nervousness: justice, real hope for victims, changing social perception, and uniting California against human trafficking, a brutal human rights abuse.

Grateful for 2011. Ready for an Amazing 2012.

Sincerely Yours,

Daphne Phung
Executive Director, Founder

California Against Slavery
